During the webinar, we suggested trying different assessments to get a better understanding of your strengths. Here’s one that we came up with based on the different roles that teachers play. Our teacher strengths - the things we’re good at and activities that we’re energized by - have a lot to do with how we fill these roles. Are you more of a teacher-designer, a teacher-learner, or a teacher-facilitator? Take this quick quiz to find out! We’ve also prepared some reflection questions that you can answer in your study notebook after taking the quiz.
Contextualize resources, content, and tools to suit their learners and their diverse needs.
Create and use appropriate assessments to measure student learning
Collaborate with fellow teachers in preparing lessons and materials
Design meaningful and engaging lessons to encourage student creativity and leadership
Collect meaningful feedback from learners and colleagues, and reflecting on these to improve their practices
Actively seek professional development opportunities that are in line with their professional goals
Practice patience towards themselves and their learners, understanding that everyone is growing.
Create safe spaces for learners to express their thoughts and ideas.
Encourage student reflection and ask probing questions to start rich conversations and discussions.
Provide useful feedback to their learners and mentor them accordingly
After taking the quiz, have a think using the following guide questions:
How do I feel about getting this result? Did I expect something different or did my results live up to my expectation?
Compare your results with what you wrote down in your Johari Window exercise. Did I discover anything new about myself and my strengths?
What strengths do I want to practice more? What strengths do I want to be more known to others?
Write your insights in your Study Notebook!
It’s important to remember that while this quiz gives us an idea of what our strengths may be, being able to identify them and having a strengths-based mindset takes a lot of practice. In this activity, we invite you to use a mind map to identify ways to carry out and live out a particular strength.
In the inner circle, write down a strength that you want to practice. You can use your quiz results as a guide for identifying a strength.
What are the things that you can do to live out this strength? Use the branches of the mind map to list these down. Feel free to add more branches if you can think of more ideas!
Try out the activities that you listed down in the branches! You don’t have to do it all at once - we suggest doing at least one a day.
Remember: strengthening your talents takes practice! It also helps to reflect on how you practice to take note of the impact. We suggest using your Study Notebook to keep track of your progress - how did practicing your strength impact you and your learners?
Example:
Being a teacher is not just about remediating our students. It’s also about identifying their strengths and designing learning experiences that will enhance them. After finding and practicing our own strengths, we can try strengths spotting, or recognizing the strengths that other people possess, with our fellow teachers. Doing this with our fellow teachers is one way that we can model the strengths-based mindset to others so that they too can adopt and practice!
Find a teacher with strengths that you admire. They can be someone with similar strengths, or someone with a strength that you want to develop more.
Find time to sit down with them and thank them for their strengths. Using our strengths can often leave a powerful impact on other people. Share all the good things that you observed happening because they used this strength.
Ask them to share their tips on how they practice this strength. Dig deeper and ask for stories - how do they live out this strength in their daily lives? What tips can they share to a person who wants to develop that strength?
