By the end of this module, you will:
know and apply learning experience design frameworks to make well-designed materials and lessons
integrate technology with pedagogy to create flexible, accessible, and inclusive learning experiences
value the importance of empathy when designing and implementing lessons
By the end of this module, you will have done the following:
Written an entry in your Study Notebook
Accomplished the UDL Checklist
Made a UDL Checklist for your own context
Answered the self-check
Universal Design for Learning is a framework to improve teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how people learn. In this module, we made a playlist of resources that you can use to dive deep into UDL and learn more about how you can design for inclusive and accessible learning.
Here are more references that you can check out to deepen your understanding of UDL:
UDL At a Glance - What is UDL and how can it guide us in the way we design instructional goals, assessments, and materials to meet our learners’ individual needs? This 5-minute video is a great overview (TIP: Closed captioning is one way to implement UDL and they have it available for this video!)
The UDL Guidelines - The UDL Guidelines are a tool used to implement Universal Design for Learning. These guidelines offer a set of concrete suggestions that can be applied in your classes. We’ve attached a handy checklist in the next activity but going through this website will give you a better understanding of what it actually means to tap into these different networks.
UDL in Action - What does UDL look like in a classroom where learners have multiple barriers to learning? In this article, the author presents an overview of UDL and what it looks like for two specific cases: Adam, who has severe hearing loss, and Bridget, a fourth-grader reading at a second-grade level.
Now that you know more about UDL, we invite you to go back to your study notebooks and use the following guide questions for reflection:
What was the most powerful idea that you took away from learning about Universal Design for Learning?
Are you already applying any of these principles to your practice? If so, which ones and why? If you aren’t applying these yet, can you mention any opportunities for you to be able to do so?
One of the ways in which we can ensure that all learners can access and participate in “meaningful, challenging learning opportunities” is by using the UDL Guidelines as a reference. In this activity, we invite you to take one of your lessons, modules, or learning packs, and use the UDL Guidelines below to assess usability and accessibility.

Remember: The UDL Guidelines are not prescriptive, so don’t worry if you weren’t able to check off everything in the list. The UDL Guidelines are a set of suggestions that you can apply to reduce barriers and maximize learning opportunities for all learners. It’s important to learn how we can own these suggestions and apply them in our own contexts.
How was the experience of looking at your own learning experiences and checking it against the UDL Checklist? Did you notice anything about your current design processes? The materials that you make for your classes? In this activity, we invite you to go back to your LAC group and share your insights using the following guide questions:
Which items on the checklist do we typically incorporate into our learning experiences?
Which items on the checklist should we incorporate more into our learning experiences?
What changes have we observed in our learners when we practice UDL principles
What might UDL look like in action at your school?
Remember: The UDL Guidelines are not prescriptive. They are a set of suggestions that you can apply to reduce barriers and maximize learning opportunities for all learners. It’s important to learn how we can own these suggestions and apply them in our own contexts. After your conversations, we invite you to collaborate on the worksheet below - what might UDL look like in your school? In the second row, share practices that would answer guide questions in the top row.
This survey is designed to help us gain a better understanding of your learning throughout the program. Don’t forget to answer this after accomplishing the previous tasks to get your certificate for this Module!
